Interested in starting your art collection, but don't know where to start? You're not alone. Starting an art collection is about more than just filling empty walls--it's about surrounding yourself with pieces that reflect who you are, what inspires you, and the atmosphere you want to evoke in your space. But how do you figure out your personal art style? How do you curate a collection that feels cohesive yet deeply personal?

Discovering Your Personal Art Style: A Quick Mood Board Exercise

To begin understanding what resonates with you, try this simple five-minute exercise:

  1. Scroll through your photos. Look at the images you naturally capture—are they full of bold, vibrant colors or more subdued and neutral colors? Do they feature nature, or cityscapes, scenes bustling with energy or quiet moments?

  2. Check your saved posts on Instagram or Pinterest. Notice any patterns? Are you drawn to abstract art, delicate line work, or highly detailed realism?

  3. Flip through magazines or books. What colors, textures, and moods jump out at you?

  4. Take notes. Jot down or take a screenshot of what stands out—whether it’s warm earth tones, ocean blues, soft pastels, or edgy black-and-white contrasts.

Understanding Colors, Textures, and Patterns

To put words to what you’re naturally drawn to, consider these key elements:

  • Warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) create a sense of energy and warmth.

  • Cool colors (blues, greens, purples) evoke calmness and depth.

  • Textures can vary from smooth solids to rough, organic surfaces like stone, sand, or metal.

  • Patterns can be geometric, floral, abstract, or even natural textures that mimic elements like waves or tree bark.

  • Scenes—Are you drawn to serene beaches, bustling cityscapes, cozy interiors, or dramatic landscapes?

It’s not secret that warm colors really get me going. There’s just something about that golden light that comes from a setting sun that I find strikingly beautiful. What about you — can you relate to loving warm hues or are cooler tones more your thing?

A Crash Course in Art Styles

Understanding different art movements can also help you identify what styles appeal to you. I am no art major, but here are some highlights I can share:

A painting of a lion in a contemporary abstract realism style
My painting, El Rai, is a great example of contemporary abstract realism.
  • Modern Art (late 19th–20th century) often emphasizes abstraction and breaking from traditional forms.

  • Art Deco (1920s–1930s) features bold geometric patterns, metallic finishes, and opulence.

  • Contemporary Art (present-day) is diverse, often pushing creative boundaries with new techniques and materials.

  • Abstract Art focuses on color, shape, and form rather than realistic representation.

  • Realism captures subjects as they appear in everyday life, with high attention to detail.

  • Impressionism plays with light and brushstrokes to capture fleeting moments.

Personally, I’m drawn to a mix of abstract art and realism, abstract-realism is how I’ve come to define it, and this style shows up in my current work.

Mixing Different Types of Art

A well-rounded collection isn’t just about paintings—consider incorporating:

  • Original paintings for one-of-a-kind, deeply personal pieces.

  • Fine art prints for high-quality reproductions of pieces you love.

  • Sculptures to bring a dynamic, three-dimensional element to your space.

  • Posters or digital art prints as an affordable way to experiment with different styles.

Trusting Your Intuition

Your art collection should be an evolving reflection of who you are—not just a match for your current decor. If a piece speaks to you, don’t overthink whether it “fits.” Art has a way of revealing layers of your personality, shaping your environment, and even expanding your perspective over time. A powerful piece of art can challenge you, comfort you, and inspire you in ways you might not expect.
